The social fraternity and sorority system primarily found at US universities, named after Greek letters.
Greek life refers to the system of social fraternities and sororities at US universities, with organizations identified by Greek letter names (e.g., Alpha Phi, Sigma Chi). Greek organizations offer social networking, leadership development, philanthropy, and lifelong alumni connections. Approximately 9 million Americans are members of Greek organizations. However, Greek life has faced significant criticism for issues including hazing, alcohol abuse, exclusivity, and perpetuation of social hierarchies. Some universities have suspended or permanently banned Greek organizations in response to safety concerns.
