📝 Admissions & Applications

Personal Statement

An essay submitted as part of a university application where students describe their background, motivations, achievements, and goals to distinguish themselves from other applicants.

The personal statement is a critical component of holistic admissions, giving applicants the opportunity to present their unique voice, experiences, and perspective beyond grades and test scores. Common App provides seven essay prompts with a 650-word limit. Admissions officers often read thousands of essays per cycle and look for authenticity, self-reflection, and strong writing rather than impressive accomplishments. Many universities also require supplemental essays addressing specific topics like 'Why this school?'
