A graduate student position where students assist faculty with research projects in exchange for tuition coverage and a monthly stipend.
Research assistantships (RAs) fund graduate students to work on faculty research projects, providing tuition remission and a stipend similar to teaching assistantships. RA positions are particularly common in STEM fields where faculty have external grant funding. Unlike TAs, research assistants typically work directly on their advisor's projects, which often align with their own dissertation research. RA positions are highly valued because they allow students to advance their academic careers (through publications and skills development) while being financially supported.
