A German federal and state government initiative funding select universities to achieve international competitiveness and world-class research status.
The Excellence Strategy (Exzellenzstrategie) is a German government program that succeeded the Excellence Initiative (2006-2017). It provides substantial additional funding to select universities designated as 'Universities of Excellence.' The 2019 round selected 10 universities and one consortium: RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, University of Bonn, TU Dresden, University of Hamburg, Heidelberg University, KIT, University of Konstanz, LMU Munich, and TU Munich. Selected institutions receive approximately 10-28 million euros per year in additional funding for seven years, renewable based on evaluation. The program has significantly reshaped German higher education by creating a more differentiated system with clear research flagships.
