Peer Review

The evaluation of academic work by qualified experts in the same field before publication. Peer review is the gold standard for validating research quality in academia.

Peer review is the process by which submitted manuscripts are evaluated by independent experts (usually 2-3 reviewers) before publication in academic journals. Reviewers assess methodology, originality, significance, and clarity, recommending acceptance, revision, or rejection. While considered essential for maintaining research quality, peer review has been criticized for slow turnaround times (months to years), potential bias, and inability to detect all forms of fraud. Alternatives like open peer review and post-publication review are gaining traction in some disciplines.
