Thesis and Dissertation

A substantial research document required for completion of a master's (thesis) or doctoral (dissertation) degree.

A thesis (master's level) or dissertation (doctoral level) is a substantial original research document demonstrating a student's ability to conduct independent scholarly inquiry. Master's theses typically range from 50-100 pages and represent a focused investigation within an established field, while doctoral dissertations can exceed 300 pages and must contribute genuinely new knowledge. The process involves proposal defense, independent research under advisor supervision, writing, and oral defense before a faculty committee. In some European traditions, the terminology is reversed — 'dissertation' for master's and 'thesis' for doctoral work.
