عملية ضمان جودة تُقيّم فيها جهة خارجية معايير الجامعة الأكاديمية، لضمان استيفائها معايير معترف بها.
الاعتماد الأكاديمي هو العملية الرسمية التي تُقيّم فيها وكالة مستقلة جودة الجامعة التعليمية وحوكمتها وأوضاعها المالية ونتائج طلابها مقارنة بمعايير راسخة. وفي الولايات المتحدة، توفر جهات الاعتماد الإقليمية (كـHigher Learning Commission أو SACSCOC) اعتمادًا مؤسسيًا، بينما تعتمد وكالات متخصصة برامج فردية. ودوليًا، لكل دولة إطار اعتماد خاص بها. ويؤثر وضع الاعتماد مباشرة على أهلية الجامعة للتمويل الحكومي، والمساعدة المالية الطلابية، والاعتراف بدرجاتها من قِبل أصحاب العمل ومؤسسات أخرى. والالتحاق بمؤسسة غير معتمدة يحمل مخاطر كبيرة للطلاب.
