Project 985

A Chinese government initiative launched in 1998 designating 39 universities for intensive funding to become world-class institutions.

Project 985 (985工程) was launched on May 4, 1998 by President Jiang Zemin, initially designating 9 universities (the C9 League) and eventually expanding to 39 institutions. Named after the date of the announcement (May 1998), these universities received substantial additional government funding — an estimated $10 billion over two decades — to improve research infrastructure, attract top faculty, and raise international standings. Project 985 universities include all C9 League members (Peking, Tsinghua, Fudan, SJTU, Zhejiang, Nanjing, USTC, Harbin IT, Xi'an Jiaotong) plus 30 additional institutions. Although officially superseded by the 'Double First-Class' initiative in 2017, the 985 designation remains the most widely recognized prestige marker in Chinese higher education.
