الجامعة البحثية
جامعة تتمثل مهمتها الرئيسية في تطوير المعرفة عبر البحث الأصيل، وتقدم عادة برامج دكتوراه، وتحافظ على ميزانيات بحثية كبيرة، ويُقيَّم أعضاء هيئة تدريسها أساسًا وفق المنشورات.
تُصنَّف الجامعات البحثية (R1 أو R2 وفق تصنيف كارنيجي) بحسب أولويتها لتوليد معرفة جديدة عبر بحث أعضاء هيئة التدريس والتدريب على الدكتوراه والتمويل الخارجي. وتتجاوز نفقات البحث السنوية في هذه المؤسسات عادة 100 مليون دولار، مع مرافق مختبرات واسعة، وبرامج دراسات عليا تنتج معظم درجات الدكتوراه في العالم. ويُقيَّم أعضاء هيئة التدريس في الجامعات البحثية أساسًا وفق سجل منشوراتهم وتمويل المنح وتأثيرهم البحثي بدلًا من التدريس وحده. وتنتج الجامعات البحثية الغالبية العظمى من المنشورات الأكاديمية وتقود منظومات الابتكار في مناطقها.
