🎓 Academic Programs & Degrees

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)

An academic and workforce category encompassing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

STEM is both an educational framework and a labor market classification that has become central to university strategy and government policy worldwide. STEM designation matters enormously for international students in the US, where STEM graduates receive 36 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) compared to 12 months for non-STEM fields. Universities increasingly create interdisciplinary STEM programs combining, for example, data science with biology or engineering with business. Global rankings for STEM are dominated by institutions like MIT, Stanford, Caltech, ETH Zurich, and Cambridge. STEM graduates consistently command higher starting salaries and lower unemployment rates. The growing emphasis on STEM has led to debates about funding allocation — whether humanities and social sciences are being underfunded relative to their societal importance. Some countries, notably Germany and Singapore, have built entire economic strategies around STEM education pipelines.
