Interdisciplinary Research

Research that integrates methods, theories, or perspectives from two or more academic disciplines to address complex problems that cannot be solved within a single field.

Interdisciplinary research brings together expertise from multiple academic fields to tackle complex challenges that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries. Examples include climate science (combining atmospheric physics, ecology, economics, and policy), digital humanities (merging computer science with literary analysis), and biomedical engineering (integrating biology, engineering, and medicine). Many universities have created interdisciplinary research centers and institutes to facilitate cross-departmental collaboration, and funding agencies increasingly prioritize interdisciplinary proposals for addressing grand societal challenges.
