A university with a primary mission of advancing knowledge through original research, typically offering doctoral programs, maintaining large research budgets, and employing faculty evaluated primarily on publications.
Research universities (classified as R1 or R2 in the Carnegie Classification) prioritize the creation of new knowledge through faculty research, doctoral training, and external funding. These institutions typically have annual research expenditures exceeding $100 million, extensive laboratory facilities, and graduate programs that produce most of the world's PhDs. Faculty at research universities are primarily evaluated on their publication records, grant funding, and research impact rather than teaching alone. Research universities produce the vast majority of academic publications and drive innovation ecosystems in their regions.
