Germany has approximately 400 higher education institutions, including 120 universities (Universitaeten), over 200 universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen), and about 50 art and music colleges. Many are publicly funded with minimal or no tuition fees.
Most public universities in Germany charge no tuition fees for undergraduate programs, even for international students. Students pay only a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) of approximately 150-350 EUR per semester, which often includes a public transport pass. Baden-Wuerttemberg charges 1,500 EUR per semester for non-EU students.
While many master's programs are offered in English (over 1,800 programs), most bachelor's programs are taught in German. Students typically need a B2 or C1 level in German (proven by TestDaF or DSH). English-taught programs require TOEFL or IELTS scores.
