Vatican City's sole higher education institution is the Pontifical Lateran University, one of several pontifical universities that operate under the authority of the Holy See; the Lateran University is headquartered within Vatican City itself while others are located in Rome. These institutions grant ecclesiastical degrees in theology, philosophy, and canon law recognised within the Catholic Church's academic system.
