A group of universities governed by a single board or administration. Examples: University of California (UC), State University of New York (SUNY), University of London.
A university system is a network of multiple campuses or institutions governed by a unified administrative structure, typically a system-wide board of regents or trustees. The University of California system (10 campuses), State University of New York (64 campuses), and University of London (17 member institutions) are prominent examples. University systems offer economies of scale in administration, shared resources like library systems and research infrastructure, and coordinated admissions and transfer policies. Individual campuses within a system often have distinct identities, strengths, and admission standards despite their shared governance.
