Technology Institute (Institute of Technology)

A specialized university focused primarily on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and research.

Technology institutes are distinguished from comprehensive universities by their focused mission on STEM fields. The world's most prestigious include MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Caltech (California Institute of Technology), ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), and Imperial College London. India's IIT system (Indian Institutes of Technology) comprises 23 campuses and is one of the most competitive admissions systems globally, with acceptance rates under 2%. Technology institutes tend to have higher research output per faculty member, stronger industry partnerships, and better employment outcomes for graduates in technical fields. Their focused curricula often mean smaller humanities and social science offerings compared to comprehensive universities. Notable examples: KAIST (Korea), POSTECH (Korea), KTH (Sweden), TU Delft (Netherlands), Georgia Tech (US), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore).
