Higher Education in Costa Rica
Costa Rica's higher education system is led by the University of Costa Rica (UCR), founded in 1940, alongside three other public universities including ITCR and UNED. The system is overseen by CONESUP, which accredits both public and private institutions across the country's 69 universities. Public universities receive constitutional funding guarantees, and the SINAES agency manages quality assurance. Instruction is primarily in Spanish, with strong emphasis on access and equity.
