Higher Education in Guatemala

Guatemala's higher education system features the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC), founded in 1681, which holds a constitutional monopoly on public university education alongside 25 authorized private universities. USAC is one of the oldest universities in the Americas, enrolling the majority of the country's higher education students. Instruction is in Spanish, and private institutions are regulated by the Consejo de la Ensenanza Privada Superior.
