Higher Education in Italy
Italy's higher education system, one of the oldest in the world — home to the University of Bologna founded in 1088 — comprises around 100 state and private universities governed by the Ministry of University and Research. The system adopted the Bologna Process three-cycle structure in 1999. Polytechnic institutions such as Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino are internationally recognized in engineering and architecture. Instruction is predominantly in Italian, though English-taught master's programs have expanded significantly.
