Higher Education in Japan
Japan operates one of Asia's largest higher education systems, with over 800 universities enrolling approximately 3 million students. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) oversees national and public universities, while private institutions enroll roughly 75% of students. The National University Corporation model, introduced in 2004, granted major universities greater autonomy. The University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, and Osaka University consistently appear in global rankings. The government's Top Global University Project aims to internationalise leading institutions.
