Higher Education in South Korea
South Korea operates one of Asia's most competitive higher education systems, with 537 universities and colleges enrolling roughly 3 million students under the oversight of the Ministry of Education. Seoul National University, KAIST, POSTECH, and Yonsei University are globally recognised research institutions, and Korea consistently ranks among the top countries in OECD tertiary attainment rates. The system is characterised by intense entrance exam competition (μλ₯, Suneung), significant private tutoring expenditure, and major government investment in R&D, particularly in semiconductors, engineering, and bio-sciences.
