Higher Education in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's higher education is administered by the University Grants Commission (UGC), which supervises 17 national universities and a growing number of approved private degree-awarding institutions across 69 total providers. The University of Colombo (1921) and the University of Peradeniya are the largest and most established public institutions. Instruction is offered in Sinhala, Tamil, and English depending on faculty, and access to public universities is highly competitive owing to the standardised exam-based admissions system.
