Higher Education in Nigeria
Nigeria operates one of Africa's largest higher education systems, with over 170 accredited universities — federal, state, and private — alongside polytechnics and colleges of education, all overseen by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Instruction is in English; flagship institutions include the University of Ibadan (Nigeria's oldest, founded 1948), University of Lagos, and Obafemi Awolowo University. Chronic underfunding, frequent academic-staff strikes, and brain drain are persistent challenges, though recent private universities and regulatory reforms are gradually improving outcomes.
