Higher Education in Nicaragua
Nicaragua's higher education includes the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN), with campuses in Managua and León, as well as private universities that have proliferated since the 1990s. The National Council of Universities (CNU) coordinates public institutions, which receive constitutionally guaranteed state funding of at least 6% of the national budget. Instruction is in Spanish; participation rates remain relatively low, and concerns about academic autonomy have intensified following political restrictions placed on civil society from 2018 onward.
