Higher Education in Netherlands
The Netherlands operates a binary higher education system comprising 13 research universities (universiteiten) and 36 universities of applied sciences (hogescholen), regulated by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). Dutch universities feature prominently in global rankings — Leiden, Delft, and Utrecht are consistently among Europe's leaders — and have pioneered English-taught degree programmes, attracting large numbers of international students. The sector is predominantly publicly funded, with tuition fees set by government statute, and research output per capita ranks among the highest in the world.
