Higher Education in Peru
Peru's higher education sector comprises over 100 licensed universities — public and private — and is regulated by SUNEDU (National Superintendency of University Education), which since 2014 has closed or denied licensing to dozens of institutions that failed minimum quality standards. The Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and the National University of San Marcos (founded 1551, the oldest in the Americas) are the most internationally recognised institutions. Instruction is in Spanish; ongoing reforms under the University Law of 2014 have substantially improved transparency and research accountability across the sector.
