Higher Education in Russia
Russia has one of the world's largest higher education sectors, with over 700 universities overseen by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education; Lomonosov Moscow State University (founded 1755) and St. Petersburg State University are the most internationally recognised institutions. The government's 5-100 Project (2012–2020) aimed to place five Russian universities in the global top 100 by accelerating research investment and international collaboration, followed by the Priority-2030 programme. Instruction is primarily in Russian; the sector faces significant challenges from geopolitical isolation following 2022, international sanctions, and the departure of foreign scholars and students.
