60 universities
Higher Education in Tanzania
Tanzania's higher education sector has grown to around 60 accredited institutions, with the University of Dar es Salaam (1970) serving as the primary research university and the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) overseeing accreditation. Public universities dominate research output while private institutions—many church-affiliated—have expanded access significantly since the 1990s. Instruction is primarily in English for undergraduate and postgraduate study, with Swahili used administratively.
