425 universities
Higher Education in Ukraine
Ukraine's higher education system—one of Europe's largest before 2022—comprised around 425 higher education institutions overseen by the Ministry of Education and Science, with the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute among the most recognised. Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 has severely disrupted operations, with many institutions relocated, campuses damaged, and significant numbers of students and faculty displaced abroad. Instruction is primarily in Ukrainian, with Russian historically used at some institutions in eastern regions; the country is integrated into the European Higher Education Area under the Bologna Process.
