Higher Education in Uruguay
Uruguay's higher education is dominated by the Universidad de la República (Udelar, 1849) in Montevideo, a tuition-free autonomous public university that enrols the vast majority of tertiary students. Around 47 institutions exist in total, including newer private universities such as ORT Uruguay. The Ministry of Education and Culture oversees the sector, instruction is in Spanish, and Uruguay has one of Latin America's highest adult literacy rates and tertiary participation levels.
