A network of 41 long-established European multidisciplinary universities, many founded before the 16th century, promoting academic collaboration.
The Coimbra Group is a network of 41 European universities, established in 1985 and formally constituted in 1987. Named after the University of Coimbra in Portugal, the group includes some of Europe's oldest and most prestigious universities: Bologna (1088), Oxford (1096), Cambridge (1209), Salamanca (1218), Padua (1222), Heidelberg (1386), and many others. Members span 23 European countries and collectively represent centuries of academic tradition. The group promotes student and staff mobility, joint research programs, and advocates for European higher education policy. It operates through task forces on topics including heritage, doctoral studies, and education innovation.
