Grandes Ecoles

Elite French higher education institutions outside the public university system, known for highly competitive entrance exams and small class sizes.

The Grandes Ecoles are France's most prestigious institutions of higher education, operating separately from the public university system. Admission requires passing a highly competitive entrance exam (concours) after two years of intensive preparatory classes (classes preparatoires). Notable institutions include Ecole Polytechnique (X), ENS Paris, HEC Paris, Sciences Po, Mines ParisTech, and CentraleSupelec. Grandes Ecoles produce a disproportionate share of French business leaders, politicians, and senior civil servants — an estimated 80% of CEOs in France's largest companies are graduates. Despite enrolling only about 5% of French higher education students, they receive approximately 30% of state higher education funding per student.
