NIT System

India's National Institutes of Technology — a network of 31 premier public engineering institutions established by the government across all states.

The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are a group of 31 premier public engineering and technology institutions in India, established as Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) starting in 1959 and upgraded to NIT status in 2002-2003. Each Indian state has at least one NIT, making them the most geographically distributed elite institution network in the country. Admission is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main), one of the world's most competitive exams with over 1 million test-takers annually. Top NITs include NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, NIT Warangal, and NIT Calicut. NITs are second in prestige only to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and collectively graduate approximately 40,000 engineers per year.
