Harvard University consistently holds the world's largest university endowment at over $50 billion USD. Other universities with very large endowments include Yale, Stanford, Princeton, MIT, University of Pennsylvania, and Texas A&M University System.

University endowments fund financial aid and scholarships, faculty positions and research, campus facilities and infrastructure, academic programs, and operational expenses. Typically only 4-5% of the endowment is spent annually, with the remainder invested for long-term growth.
