Hidden Ivies

A group of 40+ highly selective US liberal arts colleges and small universities whose academic quality rivals the Ivy League but with less public visibility.

The Hidden Ivies is a term popularized by Howard and Matthew Greene in their book of the same name, referring to approximately 50 US colleges and small universities that match or exceed Ivy League academic quality. These include top liberal arts colleges like Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Pomona, and Bowdoin, as well as selective universities such as Georgetown, Vanderbilt, and Rice. Hidden Ivies typically feature small class sizes (often 10-15 students), close faculty-student interaction, generous financial aid, and high per-student spending. Their graduates achieve admission rates to top graduate and professional schools comparable to or exceeding Ivy League rates.
